伊梅尔达·斯汤顿1956年1月9日出生于英国，父母都是爱尔兰血统。在剑桥大学完成学业之后，她主要参与舞台剧和电视系列剧的演出。她多才多艺，唱歌和演戏的天分都很高，1988年在皇家莎士比亚公司(the Royal Shakespeare Company)出品的电影《The Wizard of Oz》中出演主角桃乐茜，赢得奥斯卡奖提名。她还曾在音乐剧《The Beggar's Opera Cabaret》、《Guys and Dolls》、以及《Grease》中扮演角色。1999年在BBC与巨着剧院(Masterpiece Theatre)合拍的电视剧《大卫-科波菲尔》中，她与鲍勃·霍普金斯饰演威尔金斯-米卡波 (Wilkins Micawber)夫妇，这是她演得最好的电视角色之一·，同时该剧也是根据狄更斯小说改编得最好的电视剧之一。2000年，她出演了一个大胆的角色--到酒吧喝酒却变成老鼠的爱尔兰人的妻子，该片受到影评家们的喜爱，伊梅尔达·斯汤顿因此赢得爱尔兰学院奖提名。
