历届沿革
奥斯卡第一届时（1927-28年，于1929年颁发），“最佳影片奖”颁发了两座，一座最佳作品奖（Best Production）颁给了史诗片《铁翼雄风》，另一座杰出艺术作品奖（Unique and Artistic Production）则颁给了艺术片《日出》。这两座奖都是授予当年度最杰出的影片，其表现手法两异但同样为优秀的电影。而事实上，评审和片厂老闆们却以他们的影响力来改变了影片的获奖。米高梅老闆Louis B. Mayer就因不喜欢自己公司的金·维多所拍的《民众》的写实手法，而无奈地将奖项颁给了《日出》。隔年，奥斯卡又改回单一的“最佳作品奖”，并决定《铁翼雄风》是这个奖项之得奖影片，而使得《铁翼雄风》总被误作是头一年度唯一的最佳影片。经过多年的发展，于1944年起，奥斯卡将最佳影片奖的提名数，限制在五部。但从第八十二届（2010年）起则增加为10部，以及第八十三届（2011年）是10部，从第八十四届（2012年）开始奥斯卡最佳电影提名数又减少为9部，一直延续至今。
有人认为，非英语系的电影只会入围最佳外语片，也就是说，只有相当少数的非英语电语，能够因为其艺术价值，而获入围最佳外语片以外的其他奖项。因此，奥斯卡最佳影片奖几乎可称作是“奥斯卡最佳‘英语’片奖”。时至2014年止，仅有十部非英语电影获得最佳影片奖的提名，分别是1937年的《大幻影(La grande illusion)》（法语）（1939年第11届）、1969年的《焦点新闻(Z)》（法语）（1970年第42届）、1971年的《大移民(Utvandrarna)》（瑞典语）（1973年第45届）、1973年的《呼喊与细语(Viskningar och rop)》（瑞典语）（1974年第46届）、1994年的《邮差(Il postino)》（义大利语）（1996年第68届）、1997年的《美丽人生(La vita è bella)》（义大利语）（1999年第71届）、2000年的《卧虎藏龙》（汉语国语）（2001年第73届）、2006年的《硫磺岛的来信(硫磺岛からの手纸)》（日语）（2007年第79届）、2011年的《艺术家(The Artist)》（默片）（2012年第84届）、2012年的《爱(Amour)》（法语）（2013年第85届）。
